About La Ronge Arts Council
Wednesday, 12 December 2007

The La Ronge Arts Council has been a member of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) for more than 35 years. The volunteer members promote local artists and bring in performers to the area from across the country. It makes available the Junior Concert Series to all schools in the area, and since 2004, has hosted performers in the Stars for Saskatchewan series. Each year, the Arts Council hosts travelling art exhibits as well as shows by local visual artists. It has also hosted a Juried Art Show and a variety of workshops. During the summers, it has organized a performing arts camp for young people.  Refer to the menu on the left for current and upcoming Art Exhibits and Stars for Saskatchewan performances.

Songs of Woods, Rock and Water

In 2005, the La Ronge Arts Council commissioned Gareth L. Cook to compose music to celebrate Saskatchewan's North during the province's Centennial year.  "Songs of Woods, Rock and Water" is a series of seven pieces for string quartet.  Four of the pieces were played in the Legislature in May, 2005 when Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a mural honouring the Indigenous Peoples of Northern Saskatchewan.  The entire composition of seven songs had its debut in La Ronge in October, 2005.

In April, 2007 the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra String Quartet performed the music in a live concert, which was recorded by CBC Radio Saskatchewan, and broadcast in February, 2008 on SoundXchange.

With funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the cooperation of CBC, the Symphony and the Adaskin String Trio, a CD of Cook's compositions for strings has been produced and distributed to schools and libraries in the province.

Copies of the CD are now also available for sale to the public.  Scroll down to listen to short excerpts from the various tracks, and for ordering information.  The CD may also be purchased online at cdbaby.

"A Miner's Song" from "Songs of Woods, Rock and Water" was nominated in the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards Classical Composition of the Year category!
